In this experiment, we had an unknown sample from which we obtained a boiling point, IR (Infrared Spectroscopy) and H-NMR to determine the chemical structure of an unknown sample. To determine the boiling point of the unknown, we used a thiele tube with high-boiling oil inside. We inverted capillary tube in the small sample tube that was holding the liquid sample and gently started heating. We stopped heating after we could see a continuous stream of bubbles that were coming out of the capillary tube. Then the stream of bubbles slowed down and eventually stopped and liquid started entering the capillary tube. The point when liquid started entering the capillary tube was our boiling point. We determined the average boiling point of the unknown
