Bombing Sarajevo Analysis

This unit called Urban Excursions has the common theme of traveling to a place and describing it to the reader in a very detailed way. I chose two essays which I compare and contrast. The first being “Bombing Sarajevo” by Dimiter Kenarov and the other “The Pippiest Place on Earth” by Sam Anderson. These two artist have an incredible way of making the reader sense the environment around them. They both use different ways of describing the places, but that is expected as different places have different characteristics. They are different in that one place was a complete failure, yet was fully part of what the author’s world was exactly what he would like. The introduction, if it can even be called one puts the reader right into the action with someone yelling. He then also adds facts and historical events that add more substance to the text. He centers everything around the city of Sarajevo and tells not only a story of his experience, but also of the city itself. He writes of how he hops off the snowcat and helps dig the snow for the waterline. Then after that he speaks of how the city hosted many important events related to alpine sports which he says dates back to the Ottoman Empire. The more recent ones include the European and World Cup circuits in 1953. I feel like Kenarov does a better job describing the history behind the city because the txt transitions from is experience into the historical part of the city after having the reader excited about events and sports that it hosts. All in all, I prefer reading “The Pippiest Place on Earth” because it it more interesting in my opinion. The story in the beginning just hooked me better and I think this is their main
