In my opinion, the cure worked because the ritual the shaman performed found his lost soul and brought it back with a lot of strength. This ceremony also brought familial unity into Paja’s life because his children showed up in this special ritual and made Paja realize his children still love and care for him. That even though they have moved on his children will forever love him and not forget about his cultural traditions. Likewise, the ceremony brought his soul back because after a year he was returned to performing shamanistic chants and reaching out to his ancestors.
In writing A Voyage Long and Strange, Tony Horwitz’s goal is clear, to educate others on early America and debunk ignorant myths. Horwitz’s reason for wanting to achieve this goal is because of his own ignorance that he sees while at Plymouth Rock. “Expensively educated at a private school and university- a history major, no less!-I’d matriculated to middle age with a third grader’s grasp of early America.” Horwitz is disappointed in his own lack of knowledge of his home country, especially with his background history and decides not only to research America’s true beginnings, but to also follow the path of those who originally yearned to discover America.

Death, destruction, famine and starvation. These are only four of the millions of horrible impacts war leaves. People live in fear and are constantly afraid of others that they see wondering if they are reckless civilians or soldiers. A Long Way Gone is the autobiography of Ishmael Beah, a 15 year old boy soldier fighting in the Civil War in Sierra Leone. This war started on March 23, 1991 and went through January 18, 2002.
In Frederik Pohl and C.M. Kornbluth’s The Space Merchants advertising companies have close to unlimited power in the media and in government, and the company that Courtenay works for Fowler Schocken one of the largest advertising agencies in New York City. Courtenay is one of the top men at Fowler Schocken at the beginning of the novel and because of this only sees people as a tool for making money as evident through selling, “liquor and hangover remedies both” (Kornbluth 39). This is one of the more tame examples of how Courtenay views people. He fully believes that there is no higher calling than advertising and will do anything to get his product sold. Because of overpopulation natural recourses are very scares therefore advertising companies
In An Hour Before Daylight, Jimmy Carter reflects upon his life as he grew up in rural Georgia. The memoir highlights the people who helped shape his life while he was attending school and working on his family’s farm. Throughout An Hour Before Daylight, Carter conveys the idea that racism is a learned behavior by utilizing regional dialect, vivid imagery, and unforgettable experiences to create tone and structure that allow the audience to truly understand what it was like to live in the South while segregation still existed. Within each chapter, Carter uses regional dialect to develop realistic characterizations of people who played a significant role in his upbringing.
Imperialism causes destruction of all forms and kinds, harming and injuring many people in the process. Bradbury demonstrates this concept in The Martian Chronicles through the literary technique of motif, in particular the motif of destruction, which is depicted throughout the book. In Usher II, Stendahl manipulates the martians and destroys them and their community, he wants to eliminate the martians because of his imperialistic ideas to take over the martian land. Also, in addition to Stendahl imperialistic ideas he wants revenge upon all of the book burners, which causes him to institute a killing spree. Bradbury explains Stendahl's explosive actions as it says in Usher II, “ My lord, you have an imagination, haven’t you?
Thesis Statement: In the book Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech, Sal changes significantly from a lot of external forces in her life. Robin Sharma once said, “Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end.” This quote really relates to Sal because when her mother left she was a mess and it was hard for her. Later, she moved and more things changed and things happened that she didn't expect to happen.

In “The Greatest Journey” by James Shreeve, he talks about how we all share the same ancestors and we all come from Africa. He says that it all started in Africa about 200,000 years ago. These people who lived in Africa years ago started to leave the area and expand to Eurasia and Australia. As they were migrating to other places, they were able to adjust to the new environment. This is when everybody started to change because of weather, food, and other factors of environment that affected these people.
In Richard Rodriguez’s essay, “The Achievement of Desire” he brings you through important memories of his life that impacted his education, and more specifically his reading and writing. As a child, he was eager to learn and ready to soak up all the knowledge he could get. He received many awards and good feedback from his teachers which gave him all the more motivation to learn more. Soon his motivation came out of annoyance of his parents.
Einstein’s Dreams by Alan Lightman is a great fictional novel which I enjoyed reading. This book is a collection of different dreams about time and how it works that Albert Einstein had in 1905. One of my personal favorite dreams is the dream of 9 June, 1905. In this world, people live forever and are divided into two populations: Laters and Nows. This world has it’s logical and illogical senses.
Moon’s anger was becoming a problem, he threw temper tantrums and had no idea how to deal with them or how to control them. At the beginning of the story, he couldn’t stand being ignored, he hated when his parents would talk about him like he wasn’t standing right there and he absolutely despised when they talked about him like he was just another one of their patients. He also hated not knowing what was going on, he knew a boy from Pakistan would be staying with them, but he didn’t know where the boy would be sleeping and it made him angry thinking about some stranger sleeping in one of his brothers beds while they were gone. At first, he managed his anger by doing what his school counselor has suggested, “Stop what you’re doing, take deep breaths and count slowly.” He had it pretty much under control, the counting technique was working for the most part.
When Neil Armstrong first touched down on the moon in 1969, millions of people watched him take the first step and create history (Villard). Yet even as we’ve moved on from the moon landings and consider them as a pivotal point for mankind, “Forty years after U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon, many conspiracy theorists still insist the Apollo 11 moon landing was an elaborate hoax”(Than). The idea that our voyage to the moon was deliberately staged seems to resurface year after year. While the conspiracy theorists claim the moon landing was a hoax, creating a fake moon landing would have been more expensive and difficult than actually reaching the moon. The race to the moon began on October 5, 1957, when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik into orbit around the earth: “When the Soviet Union launched the satellite Sputnik, on October 4, 1957, the United States experienced a technological identity crisis”(Olson).
