Rough Times In A long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah tells a lifetime story of Ishmael and how he grew up in life. Ishmael Beah was a very young boy that had a very good amount of heart and had no fear. Ishmael Beah became a soldier at the age of twelve during the Civil War in Sierra Leone. One day Ishmael and a couple of his friends went out to perform in there rap group, during the time his village was under attack. Ishmael and his friends now travel from place to place to trying to find shelter and other accessories to help them survive. They would take anything to help them survive this war. He was having a good time with his brother and friends in his rap group performing from place to place. While he was gone his village became under attack and he had no idea what was going on until he came back to his village. During the time he was back he was so confused on what was going on and was very scared. He knew that he and his brother and friends had to go place to place and search for food water and also shelter. He knew he was in some trouble and seen that the town was in trouble. He and his friends knew one escape route and they all headed for it. He said “mothers screamed for their lost children as children screamed because they were lost” (page 24). This shows the emotion of what people lost and how horrid this war was going to be. Ishmael and his friends start getting into bad things. They start getting into drugs and other substances known as “brown brown” a deadly type of drug. In the story it says brown brown is “cocaine mixed with gunpowder” (page121). They soon start getting bad off and the government releases him at the age of sixteen. While he was in the army he soon realizes all the bad stuff he has done to people and all the bad chemicals he has put into his body and said he would never forget himself for what he has done. After Ishmael was released from the Army he was taken to a rehabilitation center to help with his conditions. He met a lady named Esther that helped him get through his hard conditions at the time. He had a very rough time forgiving himself after all he had done but Esther helped him with all the love and sympathy she gave to him and found a way to soon forgive himself. Soon after that he is accepted back into his family and gets love and support from each one of his family
