Hatchet is the first book from the Hatchet series written by Gary Paulsen. The book was first written in 1989 and it is still one of the famous book among the young readers. The book Hatchet is all about the main character Brian, whose parents got divorced because of a SECRET and gets stuck in a Canadian wilderness by himself after a plane crash and had to survive only with a hatchet. Since Brian was a city boy, he wasn’t use to surviving in a rough circumstance but as the story develops, Brian also becomes more independent and more pragmatic. Even before the plane crash had happened, Brian was isolated from almost everyone not even talking to his mum. At first, when Brian got isolated from the outside world he was scared and afraid. He didn’t know how to light a fire or make a shelter for himself and later also felt lonely and isolated for not being able to tell anyone about his accomplishments. Some of the techniques are; symbolism, flashback, imagery and syntax (repetition). Symbolism is the use of symbols or items to represent an idea or other objects. In the book, the hatchet is the main tool used throughout the book. Hatchet was the only thing that Brian had from the start to survive and keep him alive, it was the only friend he had giving him hope to survive. This makes the hatchet symbolise hope and perseverance however, in chapter 13, Brian tried to kill himself with the hatchet after seeing the plane pass him which also symbolises despair.
