In the book Soldier 's heart a young boy named Charley Goddard at age 15 he wants to be in the war. He doesn 't think of what the war would be like on till he got to there after he gets of the train the first battle which was fort snelling they didn 't have uniforms for him So they gave him a pair of black pants a pair of gray socks and a black hat. He probably thought that they would of had nicer clothes but he thought wrong.
“Is life in the army what Charley expected?” The book “ Soldier’s Heart” by Gary Paulsen features a fifteen year old boy by the name of Charley Goddard. His fantasy of war isn’t anywhere near the harsh reality the soldiers really have to live through. As the North begins to take the lead in the Civil War Charlie believes that he should join the Minnesota Volunteers because, ever since his father was killed by a fatal blow to the chest by a horse, he feels like he has to be the man of the house.
LIFE IN THE ARMY Charley Goddard joined the army at the age of 15 due to the excitement of the war Charlie felt that he had to join and go see places thinking he would never have another chance. When he joined they sent him to a fort as far away from the war as possible. While at his first station, all he did all day was eat disgusting food and perform drills. After several months of drills, bad food and his mother sending him letters telling him to run away before the Army gets him killed, the commanding officer told them to all pack up and that they were heading out.
When Charley joined the First Minnesota Volunteers he along with many others wanted to help support his country during war. Everyone from the Union and the Confederacy thought that the war would be over soon but sadly they were wrong. The war that Charley had just joined would be bloodiest American war yet. Charley found out in this book that war changes people and that it is often not what people make it out to be.
In the civil war novel Soldier’s Heart by Gary Paulsen, within pages 52- 57, Nelson, a fellow soldier was wounded in the stomach. This made it difficult for him to fight or even breathe. Stomach wounds were known as untreatable injuries meaning that when a soldier got one they were practically left to die. When soldiers were super injured like in this situation and didn’t have enough strength to keep fighting, they had to be left on their own to die.
I selected the book, What this Cruel War Was Over by Chandra Manning because I have always been fascinated by the Civil War. The Civil War was a gruesome war fought in the United States between the North and the South over the liberation of slaves. I chose this book because I have always been enthralled by the idea of a patriot serving his country and risking his life to protect his nation. For this reason, I selected this book to learn of the horrific struggles faced during the time our nation fought over slavery. This is Chandra Manning’s first book.
The American Revolution marked the history of many heroic events that immaculately stand as true inspirations for the generations to come in the United States. Even today, the gallantry of a few soldiers that won independence for the country is not only kept in the hearts of the people but run in the American blood to demonstrate acts of valor at times of war and hardships. One such story recorded in the history dates back to 1776, about a sixteen-year old juvenile, Joseph Plumb Martin, joined the Rebel Infantry and recorded his tribulations about forty-seven years in a memoir titled as “A Narrative of a Revolutionary Soldier”. The book mainly focuses on the sufferings through the tough situation he went through.
In chapter one of What They Fought For, I learned about the letters and diaries of the Confederate soldiers. The themes of the letters were home-sickness, lack of peace, and the defense of home against their invading enemy. The thought of soldiers fighting for their homes and being threatened by invaders, made them stronger when facing adversity. Many men expressed that they would rather die fighting for a cause, than dying without trying and this commitment showed patriotism. Throughout the letters, soldiers claimed their reason for fighting, was for the principles of Constitutional liberty and self-government.
This novel is written and told by Joseph Plumb Martin himself. In these first hand accounts, he tells of the obstacles him and the numerous other soldiers faced during the American Revolutionary War. Along with speaking of the hardships faced, Martin also provides background of not only his life, but what the country was like during this time. Martin speaks of in the year 1774, he didn’t want to have any ties to the war, he felt that he’d be safer at home. (Martin, 96) When it comes to the weather that was faced, the men experienced all seasons Cesarino 2 every year the war was taking place.
Soldier 's Heart Charley and his soldiers had to face very difficult things they had to through starvation, disease illnesses, dehydrate from filthy water that wasn 't clear. They had got so hungry that they eaten raw pork old bread. They didn 't have warm comfy beds they had to lay on the cold hard ground .They was very worn out they had to fight non stop when they did stop they would run to the tree lines to hide and try to wait for the other soldiers to retreat back to the woods so they can come back out and shoot them. They had to dig holes and they used it as a restroom to keep their areas clean.

Northern Americans against Southern Americans fought against one another for a variety of motives. These motives aroused from a wide range of ideologies that stirred around the states. In James M. McPherson’s What they fought for: 1861-1865, he analyzes the Union and Confederate soldier’s morale and ideological components through the letters they wrote to love ones while at war. While, John WhiteClay Chambers and G. Kurt Piehler depict Civil War soldiers through their letters detailing the agonizing battles of war in Major Problems in American Military History.
In the book, When a Heart Turns Rock Solid by Timothy Black, the lives of three Puerto Rican brothers is uncovered. The parents of these boys, Juan and Angela moved them around in their youth. They were born in Puerto Rico and then were moved to Yonkers, NY where Julio started first grade but ended up finishing first grade back in Puerto Rico. Julio the started and finished second and third grade in Yonkers, NY before moving back to Puerto Rico again and remained there for four years. After the four years in Puerto Rico, they moved back to America for good (Black 17).

Soldier’s heart is a disease name that was used during the times of Civil War. it was said that although the disease was called soldier’s heart, most people did not know what the disease was.
Life for the Union Soldier was not only brutal on the battlefield, but the camp life for a Union soldier was just as cruel. With the lack of personal hygiene, unsavory and repugnant food, and the shortage of clothing made living, a very difficult thing to do. Growth in the number of people with diseases was also a contributing factor to the massive amounts of death within the camp and as well as the post-battle wounds that often left either a man with one less limb or put in a mental institution. A Union Soldier’s life during the Civil War was cruel and horrific during their stay at the camps.
Throughout the war, tens of thousands of people were massacred. The book Memoirs of a Boy Soldier exhibits how a war can drastically change and affect mass amounts of individuals, manipulating their fragile culture. Beah lived a fairly average life before his country was ravaged by war. He attended school, had friends, and was passionate about rap music and dance.
