The “legends” referred to in the title of the book When the Legends Die by Hal Borland and what happens to them is the center of the plot. The “legends” are the old ways. For example Bear’s Brother and Tom Black Bull’s hair, braids, and Bear’s Brother and Tom Black Bull’s clothes, not to mention all of the songs and chants and how he treats nature. These “legends” or traditions die as the book goes along. It is easy to tell by his name. When he was Bear’s Brother, none of the “legends” were dead; he was very close with nature and the cub, he had braids and wore the clothes of the old ways like a clout and leggings.
