Not only tanks, aircraft, machine guns, or bombs, but also displays of stylish dining rooms and kitchen appliances were the weapons of the Cold War. Greg Castillo, the author of the book, Cold War on the Home Front: The Soft Power of Midcentury Design, Castillo successfully covers a non-familiar topic, which is the function of domestic housewares in the propaganda battle between capitalism and socialism. At the beginning of the book, Castillo explains the importance of household consumption and modern domestic wares to demonstrate the superiority of either capitalism or socialism in the propaganda war. To support his idea, the author gives an emphasis on the "Soft Power" more than the "Hard Power."
During the Cold War was based on two different types of beliefs called Communism and Capitalism and both the U.S. with its own allies and the U.S.S.R. Its Communist allies are equally to blame for starting the war. When the Iron curtain was around the East European government adopted a communist system and fell under the control of the U.S.S.R. The Iron Curtain, political, military, and mysterious barrier raised by the Soviet Union after World War II to seal off itself and its dependant Eastern and Western European allies from open contact with the West and other non-Communist countries. The Cold War began around the time the wartime confederation between the United States and the Soviet Union broke down, during the years 1945 - 1950. The battle between the two dominions, communism and capitalism, battle for more than 40 years. The Cold War essentially began with empty threats about bombing each other with weapons including nuclear bombs and ballistic missiles resulting in nothing but a game of I guess you can say “one on one basketball”. There were two sides to this war the entire time but the main countries that were battling was the United States and the Soviet Union. After World War two the U.S. and the Soviet Union initially had an ideology and political rivalry between the United States and USSR that gave way to the start of the Cold War. This period was known as the Cold War because there was no large-scale fighting between the two superpowers. The Cold War impacted more than world events and U.S. foreign policy, It impacted U.S. domestic policy and American society because after WW ll the U.S. decided to spend 64% of the money more on military defenses than education. They had also taken away the freedom of speech, took away passports, it was a struggle for Paul during this time in June 1956.
The Cold War was a time when The United States not only secured it’s place as an influencer of international affairs, but explored its new standing as a rival to other world leaders. Immediately following World War 2, The USSR and America’s relationship began to dissolve as fundamental differences in basic beliefs for government and military organization became clear, and without a common enemy to unite the two, tension and conflict would separate the superpowers for almost 45 years. The policy of containment, The Truman Doctrine, and NSC-68 would each play a pivotal role in the Unites States stretching its hand of democracy into foreign lands, and using military force against the regimes that began to stand in freedom’s way. Beginning in 1946, the Policy of Containment was proposed by George Kennan in a document now titled, The Long Telegram. He presented his hopes that the United States would attempt to keep communism and regimes within their current borders.
The Cold War was the war against the United States and the Soviet Union and their alliances that chose sides throughout the war. This started because of United States making a nuclear bombs and the Soviet Union trying to spread communism. Although the Soviet Union started the Space Race and started the spread communism ultimately the United States is to blame for the Cold War because they were good with communism for selfish reasons, started the Arms race and, built alliances for themselves first. The Cold War period had been a time of great competition between the allied powers and there were arms and space races but once the Atomic bomb had been invented, there was no turning back. There had been quite a bit of history between the Americans and the Japanese but had it been enough to make the USA go ahead and bomb Hiroshima aswell as Nagasaki three days later. Had there been proper reason to go ahead with these actions or were there ulterior motives in the mixture too? At the end of it all, the Americans acted out of greed and vengeance while the Japanese were left to fend for their land.
The Cold War lasted decades and tensions continued to heightened. Trepidation spread among American citizens about the future of their country and world. Would communism take over or would the United States stand their ground and push for democracy? Following the Second World War, the Cold War caused the American people to fear the growth Communism, an economic depression, and a possible nuclear war, yet the Eisenhower Administration successfully addressed these concerns and implemented ways to reduce these fears. First and foremost, the American people feared that communism would spread and take over governments in other nations beyond the Kremlin.
Abe Lincoln, in his second inaugural address, uses language with which the audience can connect and relate. Through inclusive pronouns, parallel sentence structure, pathos, and metaphors, Lincoln does not simply list off what the war has entailed or recommend a certain path the people must take. Lincoln instead consoles the nation as if it was a dear old friend whom is in dire need of advice. The first rhetorical strategy Lincoln used was inclusive pronouns such as “we”, “us”, and “all”. Additionally, the president began the address with the inviting words “Fellow Countrymen”.
Ronald Reagan was an influential and innovative American President who was often called the “Great Communicator” because of his inspirational speeches. From 1982 to 1984, Reagan gave three official State of the Union addresses. Reagan’s State of the Union addresses from his first term in office conformed to the conventions of modern State of the Union addresses and will be proved by the following points: • The speeches follow a structured formatting of showing concern, targeting specific issues, and offering policy recommendations. • Reagan’s addresses were given orally and followed typical word count. • The tone was optimistic and patriotic and used unifying diction.
Jack had been staggered by the concussion from the shell that took the sergeant’s life and half his face, but he hadn’t fallen into the mire. Stone Jack, he remained. The torn body of the fallen sergeant stretched across the walk beside him. He nuzzled the rough cheek with his smooth muzzle.
While exploring this book I was able to get a better understanding of how exactly the Cold War shaped the world I live in today. The book The Global Cold War by Odd Arne Westad covers a wide assortment of topics, the most prominent being how the Cold war was shaped, and how it has shaped the places we call home today. Overall, this book allowed the readers to get a better understanding of the Cold War in a more in-depth and global way. Within this book, the reader can see that the chapters are divided by topics instead of when the events took place.
he first chapter of The Cold War: A New History begins by comparing the United States to the U.S.S.R. and talking about the similarities between the two. It also talks about Communism and how Marx deemed it necessary in order to build up the economy. Lenin tried to implement Communism in Russia. They were not quite ready for that kind of system, so Stalin tried to modernize the economy. The U.S.S.R. had more casualties in World War II, but things were not necessarily looking great in America either.
To examine the Cold War consensus, one must discuss the Cold War. The Cold war was the tension between the United States, standing for capitalism, and the USSR, standing for totalitarianism and socialism, following World War II. Although it was not a physical war between the two superpowers, many proxy wars had came out of it as way to spread or combat communism throughout the Free World. The Free World, as the U.S. came to define it, did not necessarily mean free as countries were being ruled by military regimes and dictatorships, but free from communism(70). During the Cold War, the spread of communism frighted the American People.
