Angelo Jardim Mrs. Nowak English 10 5/7/24 Custody case In the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, published in March of 2005, she talks about the struggles Jeanette and her family had growing up. They're struggling big time. For a better life, one of the parents should take charge and look after the kids full-time. Right now, they are not being treated well at all. Rose Mary Walls, their mom, is the best choice to take care of all the kids. Although Rex would be able to teach the kids life skills, it is important they learn academic skills which their mom can do since she is a teacher. “Mom read everything: Charles Dickens, William Faulkner, Henry Miller, Pearl Buck. If Rose Mary had full custody over the kids, she could teach them basic academics because of her teaching degree and her love for reading. Children would be better off with academic knowledge vs. random knowledge. This evidence shows the limitations of Rex's teaching because Rex did not go to college so he does not have all the important or basic knowledge that Rose Mary does.. Since abuse can affect someone for life, the kids should not have to experience it, therefore Rose Mary should have the kids. When one of the kids upset Rose Mary, she would tell Rex and he would deal with it. Sometimes Rex would come home too drunk or drink too much and start beating the kids. “He came home in such a drunken fury that Mom usually hid while we kids tried to calm him down. He broke windows and smashed dishes and furniture until he'd spent all his anger.”(walls 72) This kind of abuse is not good for kids and can ruin their lives. If Rose Mary was their mom, they would not have to worry about getting physically hurt by their parents. Rose Mary should have full custody of the children because she doesn't physically hurt or put them in danger like Rex
