First of all, The Goose Girl takes place long ago, when kings and queens were important, marriages in royalty were arranged, and neighboring kingdoms quarreled. The conflict that Ani, the main character, faces is obviously much more different than a conflict that would occur today, considering the fact that Ani is a princess traveling to a neighboring kingdom on a very long journey and has been robbed of her title by her lady-in-waiting, Selia. However, the time that this story takes place in is not specific due to the fact that it is based off of a Grimm Brothers' fairy tale. Additionally, the story spans over a long period of time from Ani's birth until she was a little girl and skips to when she is a sixteen-year-old. In Kilendree, the Kildenreans have light, fair hair and a certain accent, proven when Ani thinks, "If the Kildenreans were scanning the crowds for a fair-haired girl, they might pass her over. On the other hand, Bayern is a neighboring kingdom that Ani travels to with her lady-in-waiting, Selia, and some guards so she can marry the prince of Bayern. In Bayern, the people have dark hair and different accent, as shown with "...Gilsa told Ani that no Bayern was as fair as she, she requested a cloth like the one Gilsa wore to hide her long yellow hair" (Hale 72). Therefore, the story undergoes a location change that gives the readers a feel of what these kingdoms were actually like. Lastly, the novel, The Goose Girl, has a very positive mood, hope, that also teaches a lesson, as long as you persevere through hard times, there is a better situation in the end.
