Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter’s life is flipped upside down when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil by a cop. She suddenly finds herself living a double life, where at home she advocates for the Black Lives Matter movement and at school, she fights to be seen as normal despite being one of the only black students in a mostly-white school. A major theme throughout the book is identity. Starr finds herself balanced between two worlds, privilege and poverty, unable to make the leap into either one.
