The beginning of the book is situated in North America. North America is destroyed and was split into 12 Districts ruled by the Capital. The Capital is an oppressive government that owns 12 Districts. The Districts are ranked by their numbers. As you got through the numbers the one that is doing the best is district 1 and the district that is doing the worst is District 12. Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year-old girl from District 12. She takes her younger sister’s place in the hunger games. The hunger game is a game held by the capitol in which one male and female from each district must face off against each other. If you don’t watch then you will be punished. Katniss must deal with a romance between her and Peeta during the Hunger Game. Katniss has been providing for her family since her father’s death in a mining accident. She has been doing it illegally by hunting beyond the boundaries of District 12. As she was doing this she learns how to use a bow and arrow. Using her experience she kills for food or to trade it. With her help her family has been able to survive. She also helps her family because Katniss signs up for the tesserae. Tesserae is a ration of grain that is given in exchange for placing someone to put in their name multiple times in the lottery for the Hunger Game. Katniss always exchanges her name for the tessera. Prim Everdeen is Katniss sister. Katniss loves her more than anything else. Katniss knows that if Prim is chosen she will not be able to survive the game. So when Prim’s name is called Katniss volunteers and to take her place as a tribute from District 12. Katniss knows that her skills as a hunter will give her an edge in the Games but the other contender is Peeta Mellark. He is the baker’s son.
