In The Book Thief, Markus Zusak uses the power of words to convey the immense impact that words can have. The Book Thief depicts how words can guide characters through flourishing and agony. The guidance of words exemplifies the book's theme: The Power of Words. Liesel Meminger, the main character, quickly discovered the power of words after her father, Hans Hubermann, taught her how to read. Reading and understanding words helped Liesel substantially understand herself and the world around her during Nazi Germany, during World War II. Liesel Meminger is a young girl who finds passion in stealing books during the wars of Nazi Germany. As if Liesel wasn't embarrassed enough, Ludwig Schmeikl teased Liesel and called her a Dummkopf (idiot). As Liesel becomes overstimulated, she allows the thought of fighting Ludwig to take over. Liesel beat Ludwig so badly that the kids surrounding the fight began to think she would kill him; she didn’t, but she came close to it. Taking a look into the war, propaganda, and Hitler had a huge variety of ways to target Jews negatively with words. During the war, Hans and Rosa Hubermann hid a Jewish man named Max in their basement. This is an example of accepting what is morally right and not fitting in with Nazis. Of course, Hans and Rosa Hubermann try multiple ways to hide Maxcheckupsheckups because they don't openly disagree with Naziszi.
