Two very well-known, prominent figures emerged as leaders in the struggle for African Americans' advancement. Both Booker T. Washington and De W.E. B. Dubois showed in their own ways that African Americans deserve better rights and need to address the symptoms in American society. However, their approach to achieving this diverged significantly. Washington advocated for a strategy focused on economic self-improvement and education. This is recognized in his Atlanta Compromise speech. In contrast, Du Bois spoke out more vocally of civil rights to occur as soon as possible and higher education, as it seemed to be necessary for achieving political and social equality. Washington thinks African Americans should focus on learning job skills and learning how to run a business. Du Bois, on the other hand, believed in fighting for equal rights and for better education. Both had really great points, but ultimately I think a mix of both would have had the best results. During the Progressive Era, which took place from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s. Some people seemed more fond of Washington’s ideas as they thought teaching practical skills and working hard could help African Americans more in the long run. But for the others, they liked Du Bois' view more as they agreed that the focus should be on equal rights and better treatment. This era saw a lot of progress in some areas, for example.
