Booker T. Washington, an educator and Civil Rights activists, advocates his perspectives on life. He believes in equality, yet favors that there are no excuses in life. Washington views two sides of life: the bright side and the dark side. At times, life will be encouraging, but it will also be discouraging. Washington points out that when life becomes discouraging, be optimistic. Optimism will lead to easier success. As an educator, Washington understands how important education is. Education is important in order to gain success because it teaches one the values of life. With education, one begins to view every aspect as a milestone, which is important. In order to gain success on must have the mindset of a successful person; therefore, education assists in the process of building a strong personality. The purpose of education is for one to do more than the body has strength to endure. Education is “the highest kind of training;” therefore, it makes a man reliable (Washington 113). To succeed in life, one must be authentic and dependable, and any level of education provides that as a quality in a person. Growing up, Booker T. Washington was not provided with education due to his race. He learns to value education because education was difficult for him to receive. Because he gained success through education, Washington believes that education assists all people in every aspect of life. Washington’s philosophies support the idea that education is significant in order to gain success. He continuously delivered speeches on education and its purpose. He also encourages education to promote self-reliance. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, similar to today, qualifications were needed in order to provide for oneself or a family. The little necessities in life are the causes of success. “The spirit of self-reliance and self-help” are important qualities to have in a person because they increase the possibilities for success (Washington 9). Washington addresses that in order to succeed, one must keep himself clean. Unless one is clean and well behaved, he will not succeed. If a man cannot keep himself clean, he cannot reach the highest success of life. He emphasizes the need to bathe, take care of the teeth, wear proper clothing and shoes, take care of the hair and fingernails, keep the workspace clean, stay low-key, read, maintain a routine, and think. Washington stresses these laws in order to demonstrate the importance of them. Having a routine and a clean environment helps one think more. A dependable environment helps one generate his own thoughts, which leads to a higher chance in gaining success. Taking care of one’s well being causes one to look and feel presentable because one should feel “ encouraged [to maintain] cleanliness” (Hornsby 1).
