It has a post office, a few shops, cafes and a Protestant church. There is a monument in Vaitape Wharf that is in memory of Alain Gerbault, the first frenchman to sail his yacht around the world. He passed through Tahiti in 1926 and returned to live in Polynesia between 1933 and 1940.
Bora Bora is located about 160 miles northwest of Tahiti and around 2600 miles south of Hawaii. This island was formed by a volcano and is surrounded by motus. All of the motus surrounding Bora Bora are flat and sandy except for Motu Toopua which is a volcanic island.
