Girl Interrupted, is a movie that follows the life of Susanna Kaysen and her temporary stay at a psychiatric hospital after she has tried to commit suicide by overdosing on Aspirin. Susanna becomes a patient at Claymoore and befriends Lisa Rowe, who has been diagnosed as a sociopath. Susanna, herself, is diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, which she clearly exhibits the signs for. Susanna has had instability in her relationship with her parents and lovers. She is also impulsive and is uncertain as to what she wants to do with her life. Susanna’s moods are also all over the place. One day she is happy the next she could experience bouts of depression. Susanna does meet the requirements for being ‘abnormal’ based on her symptoms. This movie did a great job at portraying the various types of mental disease that are brought up in the movie (Rathus 304). Throughout this time period having a mental disease was a very taboo subject that was kept very hush hush. Susanna’s parents met with her and her psychiatrist to discuss her diagnoses of borderline personality disorder and her mother almost fainted. She could not deal with the difficult diagnosis that Susanna had received so she and her husband left the facility leaving Susanna to deal with her diagnoses all on her own. Also, Susanna’s then boyfriend came to visit her during her stay before he was to be sent off to war. He wanted Susanna to escape, leave with him and go to Canada so he could escape from having to serve in the war. Susanna refused because she knew she needed to stay to receive treatment and because he had friends at the facility that she did not want to leave. He could not understand this so he left her and never came
