Borderline Personality Disorder Borderline personality disorder or BPD is a serious mental disorder. According to a nationwide study, 5.9 percent of adults in the United States could have this mental disorder (Nolen-Hoeksema, 2014). BPD is manifested by an ongoing pattern of mood instability as well as behavior, functioning, and self-image (National Institute of Mental Health, 2016). People that suffer from borderline personality disorder can experience extreme depression, anger, and anxiety (National Institute of Mental Health, 2016). According to what is shown in the video, many qualities of the disorder make life very difficult (Beyond Entertainment, 2004). The strain on relationships can cross over into work life making another aspect of the person’s life more difficult as well as doing poorly at work can influence the person’s home life (Beyond Entertainment, 2004). Feeling misunderstood and judged for their emotions can increase a person’s urge to self-harm or even increase suicidal ideation (Beyond Entertainment, 2004). A mild case of borderline personality disorder may present as a mildly depressed person with a slight anger problem who has had a few rocky relationships and may tend to worry that their significant other is cheating. A more severe case of BPD may look more intense. The person may suffer from severe depression, over react to simple problems, experience anger in situations where it seems unnecessary and have an extreme fear of abandonment. The more severe case may also self- harm or contemplate suicide due to a poor self-image. Having a friend or relative with borderline personality disorder can be quite difficult. They may overact to things you say or do. The person would also likely be very clingy because they fear your abandonment but may want nothing to do with you after a few days. Having someone with BPD in your life can feel like a rollercoaster of emotions. If you feel someone you know may have BPD it may be helpful to them if you calmly explain what you are seeing in them and where they can go to get
