Ignorance or uncertainty about oneself is normal for every person until they take an adventure through independence. In the book “Born on a Blue Day” one can read how Daniel Tammet’s life began as scattered pieces like a puzzle, and as he got older the pieces were brought together showing many an unforgettable picture. As one takes the journey through this book, watch how Daniel becomes stronger in who he is and how he got where he is today.
When Daniel came back from Lithuania he was able to inform his parents of his homosexuality, but why did he wait since he knew at the age of eleven that he was attracted to boys (Tammet 109). In an author interview, Daniel explained that he has an intensely loving but complex relationship with his mother. In Lithuania, he was able to become himself, make new friends, understand some emotions and feel free. “I would stop under a blazing streetlamp and turn my face up towards the falling sky, stretch out my arms and spin around and round in circles (Tammet 132).” This is a picture of freedom and wonder that help Daniel settle in his life, and develop routines with a sense of calm and security that helped him with change (Tammet 135). Though Daniel has difficulty feeling and identifying emotions, he was able to be independent and find love with Neil back in London. Emotions are difficult for every person but when there are uplifting people around anybody can overcome or understand those emotions. Falling in love with Neil was not so much difficult for Daniel but taxing on the mind and body (Tammet 143).
