Nottingham town in northern England was Smith’s residential area. Smith was born and brought up in the town that was characterized by poverty and crime (wijnstra, 62). Despite being nurtured by his both parents, Smith from the beginning was a rebellious child who consistently engaged himself in mischievous behavior in the town. Not only did he rebel against his parents but also the whole society (wijnstra, 62). Smith believed the society was against him, and so he could do anything that was not in accord with the community values. Having missed school, Smith hated people believe that those who attained school knowledge had a better chance of advancing themselves. He had a remarkable capability of running which he utilized in many activities of his life. His long and skinny body made him escape away from the police (wijnstra, 68). However, this time, he had a good reason to show his capability of running. One main reason why Smith ran for Borstal prison school was that he was talented. Many other people could have wanted to run for the institution, but they were not in that position since they were not gifted. Therefore, the governor saw Smith as the best competitor in the race (wijnstra, 68). Secondly, Smith ran for the institution to be offered a light workload in the school. Defiant youths were subjected to a heavy workload in the prison. For those who participated in value adding activities the workload was reduced for them (wijnstra, 70).
