Her mom is a free spirited and loves to draw, but loves her husband more. She really doesn’t care for her children. In result of her mother not caring; Jeannette was very independent. By the time she was in the twelfth grade she aided her siblings as well as herself to move to New York on their own. Her dad is a dreamer who plants false ideas in his children’s head about him inventing a device that will find them gold.
Florence Kelley Speech Florence Kelley conveys her message about child labor in her speech. Through the use of different rhetorical strategies, she shows us how each state’s child labor laws are different. Each state has their own law of how long the child should work and an age. The children are expected to be working while the adults are buying.

She uses ethos, logos, and pathos to reach to her audience. When using pathos she appealed to emotions, for example, “No one in this room tonight can feel free from such participation”(Kelley 65) making the audience feel a sort of guilt and fault in unison. Also, she states, “Tonight while we sleep, several thousand little girls will be working in textile mills, all the night through, 20 in the deafening noise of the spindles and the looms spinning and weaving cotton and wool, silks and ribbons for us to buy”(Kelley 18), this creates an image of horror, of the inhumane treat towards the children, it makes the audience look at themselves as participants of this ongoing issue, feel pity, sadness and frustration, feeling like there is nothing they can do to help. Afterwards, she uses credibility such as acquired knowledge from past experiences in order to make her message credible. To portray credibility she uses specifics we unconsciously choose to ignore such as, “The children make our shoes in the shoe factories; they knit our stockings, our knitted underwear in the knitting factories”(Kelley 66), in addition to the fact that she probably witnessed these events.
Simple moments like these, are when their parenting notions become exceedingly noticeable. Allowing a three year old child to cook on a stove, is irresponsible and hazardous. Signs of mental illness, and alcoholism also effected the children in many ways. I was astonished at how strong Jeannette became as an adult in her later life. As the rate of industrialization in America grew during the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries, child labor became more and more common. The rapid growth of the economy and the vast amounts of poor immigrants during the Industrial Age in America justified the work of children as young as the age of three. By 1900, over two million children were employed. However, the risks of involving child labor greatly outweighed the positives; child labor was inhumane, cruel, and caused physical deformities among children. Children typically worked in coal mines, mills, and factories which contained many life-threatening hazards.
Child labor during the 18th and 19th century did not only rapidly develop an industrial revolution, but it also created a situation of difficulty and abuse by depriving children of edjucation, good physical health, and the proper emotional wellness and stability. In the late 1700 's and early 1800 's, power-driven machines replaced hand labor for making most manufactured items. Many of America 's factories needed a numerous amount of workers for a cheap salary. Because of this, the amount of child laborers have been growing rapidly over the early 1800s.
During the Progressive time, the main goal was to expand the government to a social setting instead of a political environment. African Americans were considered inferior to the white culture. Child labor was seen in all factories, they would work in the cruelest conditions for little to no pay. During this time, it was Congress’ decision whether or not child labor was legal or not. In present day, African American have a lot more freedom than written in history.
1. How do these testimonies present the realities of child labor? Give specific examples. The testimonies give us a brief snapshot of the condition in which children worked.
Child labor was a great concern in the Industrial revolution but very few people did something to stop it. Women and Children were forced to work more than 10 hours a day with only forty minutes to have lunch. Elizabeth Bentley once said that they didn’t have any time to have breakfast or drink anything during the day. They worked standing up and if they didn’t do their work on time they were strapped (whipped). Children were treating like they were not important, like they didn’t deserve a better life.
Child labor. A topic widely frowned upon, may be beneficial when executed properly. Employing children can possibly provide stability and safety to a child, and opportunities for their communities to advance. In its simplest form, child labor can be beneficial to communities and families when laws and rights are respected. Keeping children off of the streets is a benefit having to do with child labor.
