The book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne and the movie “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” are similar and different. Three similarities are that Bruno falls off the swing, Pavel spills the wine, and Bruno and Shmuel’s plan to find his ‘papa’. Three differences are Shmuel’s little snack, pPropaganda, and Elsa’s (mother) reaction to the information that Jews are being killed. The similarities between the book and movie are shown in many ways. One way that the movie and book are similar is that Bruno falls of the tire swing that he makes. In the novel, Bruno hurts his knee and elbow and when he falls the tire comes back and hit his head. But in the film Bruno only hurts hurts his knee not his elbow and tries to get up. For instance, Shmuel’s little snack is one difference. In the novel, it was a piece of chicken that Bruno gave, and Shmuel wasn't as open to taking it, but still ate it. Although in the film, it was (by the looks of it) something like a cinnamon bun or a sweet bread and Shmuel took it willingly because he was starving. But Shmuel still ate the food that was given to him by his “best friend” and still got caught by Lieutenant Kotler because Bruno lied, that he had no idea who Shmuel was and that Shmuel stole the food that he was eating. The second disparity was Mother’s reaction to the way Jews are being treated and killed. In the novel she already slightly knew of what was going on behind the camp gate, unlike Bruno. However in the film, when Lieutenant Kotler tells her you see her reaction, and then you see her slowly start to break down. For example first you see Mother with her eyes red as if she had been crying a lot, then she stops doing her make-up and hair, then she has a huge fight with Father which keeps Bruno and Gretel awake. But, the Jews were still being gassed and treated horribly, and Mother still does 100% not agree or like it along with the Grandmother. The last contrast was the propaganda.
