Good afternoon class of 8E and I am here today to speak about how the theme hope is represented in the book Boy Overboard. Hope. What does it exactly mean? According to the Oxford dictionary hope is defined as a feeling of expectation and desire of a particular thing to happen. We see hope in everyday life and experience it all the time and without hope there is no real purpose in life. We experience hope in boy overboard by Morris Gleitzman in a number of ways whether it is for a small problem or a life changing problem. There are many examples of hope in the book boy overboard, including right at the beginning of the book when Jamal hopes to kick a goal whilst playing soccer or when the family have hope to leave Afghanistan when there house gets blown up as a …show more content…

Jamal thought of the worst and lost some hope that their parents are gone but then kept praying as they had hope there was always a chance for their parents survival. When their parents were rescued they got a huge surprise and realised that hope should never be lost. Boy overboard is written in first person to experience what life in a war torn country is like, in this book it shows life as a child. Jamal experiences hope a lot especially when they were going to Australia. He was hoping Australia’s government were kind and caring as he heard from other people. His family hoped to find peace and safety when going to Australia but they never actually got there completely. We don’t realise how many times we hope for things that aren’t really worth it and this may be juxtaposed with Afghanistan or anyone living in a war-torn country of how important that their hopes may be. We can hope for our students to do more work but an average hope for someone living under the Taliban could be to life a better life and flee like many of them
