In my sequel to the short story, "Boys and Girls," I chose to retell the same story in a different narrating voice. This minute alteration was essential to make for the reader to fully comprehend the story. When given a story called Boys and Girls, a narration and description of life from both, a boy and a girl is expected, but in the original, the male’s perspective is left untouched. Consequently, this new perspective produces clarity, which is a major reason as to why I made the decision to alter the voice. The narrative change paints a full picture and allows for the audience to see the glaring contrast between the genders. Revealing the day-to-day activities Laird participated in, also helped develop his personality as a character. The description of his activities was crucial to creating a dynamic character and display a change in Laird as readers begin to notice his childish habits fade away. For example, I explain the reasoning behind him no longer singing with his sister as he is no longer scared of the dark and is starting to develop a sense of masculinity and power. The theme of coming to terms with society’s expectation of you is one that is consistent with both stories. The reasoning behind this decision is to stress the point that no one can run away from society’s prejudice and the only way to be accepted is by conforming to its rigid demands. This theme is reiterated all the way to the last line of my story where he realizes and accepts the superiority and sovereignty that comes from being a man. For my sequel, I found it necessary to show Laird’s lack of knowledge on the workings of the farm. His inexperience had to be displayed to show how unfit he is to take over the business. Although his gender gives him authority, Laird 's inability to make his decisions demonstrates that he ultimately has as much control over his future as his sister does. In conclusion, my little and straightforward modification of narrating from Laird 's point-of-view had a tremendous impact and was justified by the perspective and understanding it adds for
