Whiplash exemplifies the perseverance someone will give to be an all time great. Andrew Neiman gives everything he has to the point of blood, sweat, and tears. Terrence Fletcher comes of as an antagonist in the exhilarating film, but is he really the antagonist? Maybe Terence Fletcher is the person Andrew Neiman needs to succeed. It was Fletcher’s relentless pressure and uncanny tactics that lead to Neiman’s prosperity.
Fletcher keen attention to details lead Neiman to strive to work harder. Fletcher coming to watch a measly little school band and focus his attention on this 19 year old, who at the time was just an alternate drummer, lead up to Neiman’s success. His job, as he sees it, is to use any means possible to push students to achieve more than is expected of them. (Macnab, Geoffrey: The Independent) Macnab makes a good point that Fletcher ideas about how to teach might be different from typical means of teaching but he just wanted the students to push past their walls and do something spectacular with their craft. He jumped off his high horse and actually helped Neiman succeed. It was that nod of approval that almost made Fletcher come of as a bad guy. At the same time, it appeared that Fletcher finally found what he was looking for. Someone that no matter what happened would not give up on his dreams. Neiman lost his book, got in a car accident, played to the point of bleeding, and became so distraught that he almost saw no future. It never stopped him. he had a dream and he chased after it. He choose to never give up till he would succeed. It was this that made Neiman such a powerful character, someone to actually give motivation for anyone that has been through this same
