On May 26, 1898, one of the world’s greatest horror novels was released. Bram Stoker, a business man in London, released his novel, Dracula, which is still a worldwide sensation over one hundred years later. The book tells the story of the vampire Count Dracula who attempts to move from Transylvania to England. This was the very first introduction of the character, Dracula, and he can now be found on television shows, movies and even a breakfast cereal. The story begins with a lawyer from England, Jonathan Harker, who travels to Transylvania for real estate consultations with Count Dracula. While on his journey, he is warned by many townspeople to turn back and he finds out why a few days later. While staying in his castle, he discovers that Dracula is cursed with supernatural powers and evil intentions. One evening, Harker is almost attacked by three provocative female vampires and he soon attempts to escape.
Back in England, Jonathan’s fiancée, Mina, is speaking with her friend, Lucy, about how she is anxious after not hearing from Jonathan in a long while. Like the people under the rule of Vlad the Impaler, the residents of Transylvania in the story were very aware of Dracula and all of his bad doings. On page 5, Jonathan Harker’s journal reads, “They were evidently talking of me…” When he writes that the people were saying words such as, “”Ordog”--Satan, “pokol” – hell, “stregocia” witch, and “vrolok” “vlkoslak” –both of which mean the same thing, one being Slovak and the other Servian for something that is either were-wolf or vampire.” This shows that the people of Transylvania knew that Harker was insane for wanting to go and visit the vicious creature Dracula.
