Throughout the story, Jem (taken from the word gem meaning a cherished and prized person) is used by Harper Lee as a representation of courage. In the beginning, Jem’s first act of courage occurs when Jem accepts Dill’s provocation to go and touch the Radley house. In the story, Scout says, “In all his life, Jem has never declined a dare” (Lee 16). This quote shows how Jem would never demur any sort of challenge, even if it involved stupid or childish acts like going to a forbidden place. Scout also shows how Jem even accepted a dare from her to jump off the roof of the house as a kid.

Columbine High School, is a famous high school for all the wrong reasons. Everyone typically asks, why? However, nothing can justify a right or wrong answer as to why the school shooting happened. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were the two shooters of Columbine. Harris was a psychopath, he was a criminal mastermind, he showed no empathy, and he could hide the fact of being a psychopath.
People have in mind that courage is about being able to save other peoples’ lives and risking your own, or to climb Mount Everest, or to jump from the top of a high building. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, real courage is demonstrated in a different and encouraging way. Real courage is shown as fighting for what is believed in and what is most important, regardless of whether you win or lose. Atticus and Scout are two characters who define courage perfectly. The reasons why Atticus shows courage is that he argued the best he could to defend the innocent man from going to jail since he knew that no one else would.
Jem had the conception that courage was a “manly man”, a man that was tough and could fight. However, using Ms. Dubose as an example, she explained a new type of courage to Jem. Ms. Dubose knew that her struggle was close to impossible to win, as many people failed to break addictions, yet she still tried to fight it, and winning at the end. The courage to do so was considered, by Atticus, real courage. This was also demonstrated by Liu Xiaobo.
Achieving true heroic status requires courage, something Tom Sawyer digs deep to find in order to save Muff Potter. For example, in the trial of Muff Potter, Tom is scared. He is scared because of the night before the trial, he told Muff’s lawyer everything he knew. This took courage because, on the night of the murder, Tom and Huck made a vow never to tell anyone about what they saw. Tom is very superstitious, and he really believes that he may die now that he broke the oath.

For example, Rikki Tikki survives against the snakes and lives joyfully with his family in safety. On the other hand, I can understand why someone would think the theme is “face your fears.” I entirely disagree. The friendly animals in the text help each other overcome the evil snakes which represents “good triumphs over evil.”
Hero’s are great and powerful people. A Hero is someone who is willing to risk their life to help someone even though they don’t have to. Ponyboy is an example of a hero. Johnny is also a great example of a Hero. Bob though, is the complete opposite of a Hero.
"Speaking of Courage" written by Tim O'Brian does a fantastic job at providing examples of both story truth and happening truth. O'Brian writes this vignette in such a way that one might disagree whether it is happening or story truth; this literary analysis will further explain the words that Tim writes about, and how they impact his theme, or facts, of the story. "The war was over and there was no place in particular to go" (131). The first line that readers will read is the above quote. The quote that O'Brian states is a very powerful quote because he is talking about Norman Bowker, the protagonist of this vignette, and is telling the readers that Norman literally has nowhere to go.
Courage essay “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” Nelson mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician who served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. In my own words i think the quote means not matter what situation a person might be in never let fear get in the way.the Quote relates to the literature we read by illustrating how the characters triumph over the fear they have and use courage.
For example, it is impossible for a mongoose to stay frightened for any length of time (para 24). This shows Rikki Tikki has lots of courage in almost anything that is important. He cannot be frightened. This means he has the courage he needs to be brave. Also, Rikki-tikki felt his eyes growing red and hot (when a mongoose’s eyes grow red, he is angry),
The younger boys are scared of the island and cannot speak out the exact fears they have because they are inarticulate. They demonstrate their concern with a snake as a symbol. Jack counters these thoughts in a rather aggressive way as he tends to kill the snake. This shows that the island itself is harmless but that the boys bring the violence and fear. The snake represents the symbol for fear but in reality there is no snake present.
