The “Brave New World” represents a futuristic society; a society that is more controlled through routine that shapes the way individuals live their lives. Things that would be considered sacred and private are essentially exploited and for public knowledge. This society that is referred to as “The World State,” is existent because of those who work within, to keep things going. Bizarre factories are a part of this society that shows and demonstrates reproduction. Humans are created within bottles then conformed to have certain beliefs, norms, and morals. Rationalization itself can be explained as the ongoing process of organizing social life around the principles of efficiency, calculation, predictability, and technology. Each principle is based on the premise that traditional ideals followed more rational paths due to societal needs. Efficiency comes about with the traditional concept of producing goods and trade. Ultimately, the process of creating goods to trade was made more efficient by the rationale of making more capital in return. Calculation followed efficiency when it became rational to quantify markets as they became larger. Continuing, predictability uses the idea of efficiency and applies the idea of calculation to adjust for the future. Technology is often used to enhance each of the other ideas. As Weber describes “action is instrumentally rational,” he further states, “When the end, the means, and the secondary results are all rationally taken into account and weighed. This involves rational consideration of alternative means to the end, of the relations of the end to the secondary consequences, and finally of the relative importance of different possible ends.” (Longhofer 246) In actuality, all of the principles are inferred in the passage except technology. Efficiency is implied mostly, while calculation and predictability are examined based on …show more content…

Firstly, the transition made to become the World State required a long process of rationalization. The best example of this comes from the first chapter of the book that examines the society’s reproduction process. From the traditional concept of reproduction to the highly rationalized concept the book explains. Reproduction becomes an efficient, calculable, and predictable assembly line made possible using technology. Efficiency is made possible by the use of “Bokanovsky process” which allows eggs to be divided into 96 possible embryos. (Huxley 7) Quantifying the possible embryos allows for calculability and predictability reserving the ability to manufacture people and socialize people for the extraordinarily specialized tasks of the bureaucratic World State. The specialized tasks required in the system require different socialization techniques as well as a formation of a hierarchy. Alphas and Betas are produced as the highest of societies groups. While descending groups fall further from the top, such as Deltas and Epsilons. Each person is placed in the hierarchy of position based on their group. Technical expertise comes from their socialization with their groups as groups are socialized to do whatever job they are meant for and are socialized against things that would compromise that. People are also socialized
