I’m especially interested in people who have struggled in their lives, yet somehow change occurs or someone comes along and makes a difference, just as the anthropologist William Crocker did in the lives of the Brazilian Indigenous people. Crocker points out how the people adapt to change The Canela lost quite a bit of land to the Brazilians. They had to adapt to gardening in a different way. Their housing changed from oval palm thatch huts. Later their houses begin to look like the Brazilians houses. Their hair style and clothing seemed to change. Dr. Crocker felt that the Canela did well with the change. He learned their language and started to communicate well with them. He stated in the essay he was adopted by them. I believe this occurred because he took interest and time to learn of them. I believe when people take interest in others who are suffering, and start to see that person as who they can, instead of who they presently see. A whole new person emerges, because someone cared enough to see a positive change occur in that person’s life. I had that to happen to me about ten years ago; I was experiencing some pretty heavy stuff, although I carried on with life, as if it was perfect. I walked around with my big Kool-aid smile. If you ever meet me I always smile, that’s just me. However, one day I could not camouflage it. A wonderful person named Marie recognized my pain. I was able to share and trust her; she took genuine interest in me and it changed my
