One of the most common cosmetic procedures is breast augmentation or augmentation mammaplasty. People who choose to have this procedure done have various options in how they want to go about the surgery. However the general procedure is as follows: first the patient will be given anesthesia to put them to “sleep” and alleviate any discomfort during the physical surgery. Next an incision will be made on the patients in usually one of three places, the armpit area, around the nipples or under the breasts depending on the patient. These areas are specifically targeted to leave the least scarring and the most desirable results. Some of these complications such as infection can be extremely dangerous, even life threatening in severe cases. Infections most often are detectable quickly after the procedure. However not all of the risks present themselves immediately like a rupture for example. Ruptures can occur a number of ways. Breast augmentation is a completely voluntary procedure. While it is expected that the surgeon provide good service and great results, most people having this procedure done is doing so at their own risk. That being said if a patient is unhappy with their results unfortunately there is not a whole lot of protection for the patients in terms of lawsuits since most cosmetic procedures are unnecessary. Also, patients are forewarned (given they go to board certified professional) and discuss with their doctors these possible outcomes. On top of fully being aware of the unfortunate possibilities the patients also must sign a waiver, basically protecting the surgeon from any malpractice lawsuits based on very possible complications like asymmetrical
