To most players on the Permian High School football team academics are put off because of football. But Brian Chavez is not most players, he cares about school a lot. Brian has a grip on reality he realizes that he cannot play football forever, there has to be a backup plan. “As he headed into his senior year he also realized that he wanted something more. No matter how glorious and exciting the season was, he also knew it would come to an end” (Bissinger 156). Brian balances his education and football, while always doing what's right. Brian is a big part of the football team, he is the only Hispanic on the team he helps bring the team together. He was driven on and off of the field. Chavez was pushed by his father Tony, Tony was a hardworking man. Toby grew up in South El Paso, Texas and did not have much drive in life. Tony was into drinking and fighting. “He entered the army in 1964… and… was stationed in Germany” (Bissinger 191). The Army helped Tony Chavez clean up his act as well as become more educated. Succeeding the Army, he worked as a electric meter reader. He soon got bored with the job and became a cop. After working as a cop for a little while, he decided to go back to school to study law. Tony became a lawyer and became very successful. His success helped him raise his kids with money and he made sure that they always had what they wanted. Brian is so highly motivated because of his father, his father always made sure that Brian worked for what he wanted. So when Brian made the football team it was because he wanted it. “Because of the success of his son Brian, he had become as faithful a devotee of the Permian football program as anyone” (Bissinger 194).
