Chapter 9 – Ancient Rome Q1. Engineering and architecture was very important during the time of Ancient Rome. They produced monumental buildings that are impressive to this day. Repetitive structures were built, such as arches and pillars, to create beautiful feats of geometric design. These buildings glorified the state and enriched the lives of Roman citizens.
Romans created the sewer and sanitation management by connecting the public bath houses and latrines all to one sewer system. The sewage was than flushed by water from the local stream sending the sewage down the side of the street and into the nearest river called Tiber. Concrete was another advancement that helped in the construction buildings and roads. Concrete was made of volcano rock that helped make the concrete sturdy. The Roman builders learned how to uses right angles and created arches.
Roman influences are visible all around us today. One of the most important lessons that our culture has taken from ancient Roman would be our roadways. Romans were the first to use roads that gave our society the formula for construction that allowed rainwater to drain off. They used numbered signposts every Roman mile, which indicated such things as the distance to the next town and which construction team had built the road.
The Roman Empire was one of the most advanced cultures of its time. The grandeur of Rome has had abiding effects on the societies of the entire world. Evidence of the brilliance and creativity of the Romans can be found in many modern countries such as the remains of roads, walls, baths, basilicas, amphitheaters, and aqueducts. These exhibit the technological advances made by the engineers and architects of the Roman Empire. Many modern civic buildings have been built using the Romanesque styling.
Many American architects in the 18th and 19th centuries looked to classical Roman architecture as a source of inspiration for their own designs. The White House and U.S. Capitol share similar architectural styles to that of Roman buildings like the Coliseum which has been standing for nearly 2000 years, and the Pantheon. “More recently, many official buildings built in the US are very strongly influenced by Roman architecture. The most obvious is the White House, which displays Roman influences in the arches and columns on the exterior” The Romans were skilled engineers and builders. They used advanced construction techniques such as arches, domes, and vaults to distribute weight and stress evenly throughout a building, which helped to prevent collapse.
And although these are all very important I believe that Roman engineering and Roman architecture are the most impressive. The Romans were great architects, and engineers. They changed the world in many ways, they were the greatest builders of roads, bridges, and aqueducts in the world. The Romans learned how to use the arch, vault and the dome to build huge structures that affected the modern world in many ways. In Roman architecture they borrowed ideas from the Greeks and other peoples, but they improved on these ideas.
Concrete pavement, on the other hand, is a mixture of cement, sand, water, pebble, and crushed
Have you ever wondered how we got the ideas to build the amazing Architecture of the world today? It all originated from one of the greatest Roman legacies. The quote "Rome fell but it's legacy lived in" was said to explain the situation Rome had been in thousands of years ago. To go further into detail, this quote is saying, that although when the once great empire Rome had fell, it's legacies had lived on. The legacies that we were fortunate enough to still continue and perfect, still strive today.
The romans valued theater and concerts, so they created concert halls with specialized acoustics. Many concert halls and theaters, such as the Globe and the Rose, were made using these Roman designs. The Romans invented the circular seating amphitheater, which is mimicked in sports stadiums and backyards. By far the two most important creations of the Romans were the arch and concrete. Concrete was invented by the Romans and used as a strong, cheap, and easy material to build (John B. Ward Perkins, 1977).
Ancient Civilizations of the ancient world have explained a lot of things in our present days, but what makes it so great is that it’s architecture. The ancient Greek and Ancient Roman are very rich and variable history and culture, but also they had similarities and differences The Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman civilizations had some differences although they are very close to each other. First, they had different social systems; the ancient Greek divided their social systems into five categories: slaves, freedmen, metics, citizens and women , and in the ancient Greek women were not given a position they were like to be less than slaves, but in the ancient Roman civilization they dived into four categories: freedmen, slaves, plebians and patricians, and women were considered citizen if they were not born into slavery, however they were not able to hold any position or vote. Second, The ancient Greek created and developed the three famous classical orders which is Doric, Ionic and Corinthian, On the other hand Ancient Roman took the classical order with making minor differences and created the arch and used it in their buildings.

The tools and materials that Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome used were hammers made of dry clay or stone and cut wood from trees used as handle sticks. They use similar tools now. Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome had smaller boats and used different wood than what Egypt and Rome currently use
It’s unique anyways within the Geek and Roman architecture that they evolved to be a great accomplish for a long time, where seriously they look indistinguishable. On the other hand that doesn’t mean that they are not different from each other, contrary each of them has a personality and a way to view its style. As we know that the Greek architecture had developed firstly, so it must had influenced the Roman architecture, and that’s what had happened, even though they were affected exceptionally by the Greeks, however they looked for a separate distinguished personality. In the meantime, we’ll see all over the essay the similarities and differences between both civilizations, including the building types, the techniques, and materials used, style and art.
But when the Romans built the Pantheon , they used the Corinthean order for it's columns . The Greeks used the post and lintel , or the trabeated system many times , but the Romans relied on the arches , and made them more perfect than the Greeks did . Also the material used in the construction of their buildings were different depending on the available and more reliable material . So the Greeks tended to use the well carved marble , granite and limestones in building , but for the Romans these material wasn't commonly used , or wasn't used to build th structure itself but could be used for decoration , they rather used the concrete and mud bricks and that helped them in the construction of arches . According to the geographic difference between them , the way they constructed their cities varied .
The architects that lived and worked during the time of the Greeks and Romans created many of the most recognizable structures in the Ancient
