I chose to do my bridge project over the subject of domestic violence, also known as intimate partner violence. I feel such a passion for this subject. A lot of times this subject is often brushed over or looked past. I wanted to create awareness and draw attention to the subject. Because of this reason, I chose to create a brochure. By creating this brochure, I wanted to provide information, spread awareness, give a sense of support, and provide resources for those who may be in a dangerous intimate situation. Shaw. She Said appears to be about a girl who was under the control of a man. She alludes to abuse saying, “Imagine, concealer was my first friend she said, cream over plums ripened deep, sugar over salt lips cracked, smiling, hiding contraband fruit” (Lockwood, 2010). The girl in this story, uses concealer to hide bruising and cuts that she may have gotten from an abuser in a relationship. She also says, “I dreamed candlelight, roses, she said, shameful now” (Lockwood, 2010). This quote is consistent with the things I have read. Many women stay because of the false promises that they are given. Another text that I felt was important to read and was vital in my project was Lisa’s Ritual, Age 10, written by Grace Caroline Bridges. Bridges writes a short story of a girl named Lisa and the things she would do after abuse. While Lisa was a victim of child molestation and abuse, something remained the same and that was, control. Many abusive relationships are built on the foundation that the perpetrator wants control. It also emphasizes the fact that many people feel stuck in the situation or feel that they belong in that situation because they have no other experiences of healthy
