Bridget Mullen's Art Analysis

Bridget Mullen is an amazing and innovative artist. She did an artist talk at the University of North Georgia (UNG) on August 27th at 2pm. The presentation of her art was held at the Gainesville Campus Art Gallery in the Performing Arts building. Recently I also saw Hsiu-Ching Yu at the University of North Georgia at the Gainesville Campus. She was there doing an Art Talk on October 1, 2015 and she had an art gallery set up as well. My favorite piece of art by Mullen is “Neighborhood Watch”. This piece of art is 39 inches by 29 inches. The mediums she uses is white acrylic paint, older art, tar paper and spray paint (Mullen). That is so cool how she came back UNG to talk about her art when she came here a few years back. Her art is called “Omphaloskepsis” and her idea of art is to “circle the stages of life and ages by using the navel as a subject. She mentions she “concentrations on a single issued and self-absorption. Omphaloskepsis can be described as artistic enlightenment” (Huis). Her medium is pencils, paper, and a stranger. She has to get to know the person for at least two weeks. She draws people’s belly button. It is pretty cool but strange at the same time. She states that consciousness is a medium as well. It looks like a cheerleader, flyer jumping up at a football game. This art was created for the viewer. The artist said in the artist talk she suffered from depression. One day when she was feeling happy she drew this art because she paints many purposes other than art. Mullen explained “I leave ideas unfinished and unintegrated for the viewer to finish the thought” (Mullen). She explained how she stayed at several different residency programs across the United States to work on her art and reflect on them. She said this was a personal expression.
