“Burn” by Suzanne Phillips gives readers the inside look into the horrors of bullying. The author not only the talks about the victim, but also the sad truth about many victims and how they suffer while bystanders of the act remain quiet and choose not to notice and admit that bullying exists. “Burn” is a moving story that talks about the journey of Cameron Grady and his inner fire.

Cameron and his younger brother Robbie are thankful that their mother made a major decision to take her and the kids and leave her cruel husband. For Cameron talking to his mother was very hard and talking to her about his school situation was even worse. His mother was always busy with work and her personal life. Cameron's mother is trying to make a relationship with Randy who is a local cop. Cameron understands how much his mother loves him and his brother, but talking to her about Rich and the other jocks is something he is not able to do. One day Patterson and his buddies corner Cameron in the locker room. Cameron who is naked and defenseless is brutally beaten. Finally when he is able to take himself to his next class he discovers vulgar pictures from his mortifying experience which are being transmitted throughout the school. At this point Cameron can't handle much more.
When Cameron runs it releases some of his built up pressure, anger, and anxiety, but he only finds true comfort in the presence of a fire. He started by first lighting matches and letting them burn to his fingertips, but after a while more dangerous stunts led to more comfort. After the locker room incident with Rich, Cameron finds out that his inner "firebug" is almost out of control.
