1929: This summer is the first summer Mary Alice and Joey go to Grandma’s house for a weak. It all gets crazy when the gauze in Shotgun’s coffin starts moving. When a reporter and Effie are over trying to receive gossip from Grandma for the paper. Everyone is scared and thinks Shotgun is coming back from the dead. Grandma pulls out her shotgun and shoots it over the coffin. It ended only being the tomcat. 1930: This summer the climax is all about the rivalry between the Dowdell's and the Cowgills. It all starts with the Cowgill boys blowing up Grandma’s mailbox to a billion pieces. After that Grandma tries to bust the boys and bust them. When grandma sends up Joey and Mary Alice to the attic to find stuff they find a hat with Abraham Lincoln’s signature on it. When they arrive to the sale Mrs. Weidenbach questions if the signature is real. It ends up being fake but Grandma still receives money. 1935: This summer it is Centennial Celebration at the town. Centennial Celebration is when everyone acts like they are in the olden days and dresses up like that and goes without electricity for a weak. Joey and Mary Alice’s clothes and very uncomfortable. One of the events they go to is the talent show. Joey Joey is a boy that loves the military and knows tons of captains and pilots. Joey also goes from being 9 to 16. He also has a big dream of flying and When he joins the military at the end of the book he thought it would be his only good chance at flying. Since he loves flying he also becomes very curious of driving when he is 15 and becomes desperate for 2 dollars for driving lessons. Grandma puts her grandkids in crazy situations like firing a shotgun inside the house and stealing a boat. Grandma also hates the gossip that the townspeople bring to her. An example of the gossip situation is when a news reporter went to grandma’s house and asked her questions that would cause gossip soooooo Grandma told the news reporter completely false info. It also seems like Grandma can talk her way out of everything like when O.B. Dickerson catches her feeding the drifters but states that O.B. was drunk with only trousers on.
