Kit Tyler has always lived in Barbados luxury. Sadly, when her grandfather dies she must marry or run away to America. After finding a boat that takes her right to her aunt and uncles, she leaves. She expects America to be grand but is disappointed when she sees dreary towns and land. Luckily, she made two friends on her voyage over to Connecticut and they both visit the town often. She reaches her destination and is swept into a new life of chores and hard work. She is used too slaves doing all the work so when she starts her new life, she must learn everything. Kit is homesick and has no comfort in Connecticut until one day she finds herself in some great meadows. She is weeping when an old woman asks if she is OK. After Hannah shows her comfort, Kit is able to start enjoying it. She decides to teach a little girl-Prudence- how to read and becomes more acquainted with Nat, a seafaring friend of Hannah's. All is good until sickness strikes. The Townspeople is angry that they blame the “witch” and go after Hannah. Kit is able to rescue Hannah and is able to get Nat to take her to his grandmother's house. When no one can find Hannah, they turn on Kit and soon she is thrust into court with charges of witchcraft. In the trial, people believe that their problems are somehow made by Kit. It first seems that Kit may actually be charged with false accusations. Luckily, Prudence walks into the room with Nat. Prudence is able to prove Kit innocent and she is set free. After this incident, Kit decides she will leave for Barbados in the spring. When spring finally arrives, she realizes she doesn't want to go home. Instead, she realizes she is in love with Nat and wants to marry him. The book ends with the two lovers walking to her uncle's house so Nat can ask permission to marry
