I chose the image of a book and a key. This represents the novel because language is a tool, like a key, that creates connection, meaning, power (like Hitler and Nazi’s), and comfort. This also represents the secrets liesel keeps, which represents her courage and bravery. In the beginning of the story, Narrator is introduced ,Liesel is on a train with her brother and mother
Dreams of Hitler, brother dies, buy him on next station, steals a book
Mother cannot take care of her, Munich, Molching Germany, foster parents, very sad
History of Hans life, Erik’s son is Max, (Jewish), Max living in the basement, Liesel struggling with language and thoughts, war is coming

Because she uses language as a way to connect to Hans (learns to read from him), reads Max, connection to Rudy (a boy that likes her)
Comfort other people (kids, read) or herself when depressed, such as with Max
Learns new things, critical thinker, realizes people aren’t just weak or stupid, they are reasons, differs right from wrong
Books represent things, but they even represent the stages of her life, beginning book of snow, fire etc.
Personality - strong believer in justice (right and wrong), emphatic with people she loves kind, intelligent because she doesn’t blindly follow Hitler and hides her secrets (courageous)
Beginning she was innocent, warrior by getting through her struggles and helping others
Realizes the constasts of other opinions, such as Hans Junior (loves hitler), Hans(conservative, secretly hates Hitler)
Trauma, after her brother dies Liesel repeatedly gets nightmares of him, screaming and father would help her
Poverty, Hans and Rosa fight over that a lot, stealing food with other kids, books,(not aggressively)

Liesel huge wake-up call is when she goes to a Hitler parade(birthday), she hears a word Kommenist, and realizing her dad was killed because of Hitler. Chanting hate words. She tells Hans she hates Hitler, slaps her and says she must never say that or family will be in danger. Reading Hans, stealing food, and books from anywhere (library), read to Max to improve her reading skills, writing her book.
Breakthrough: When Max tells her of how powerful words are later on, she realizes that language is not just something normal, it is a way to spread ideas and gain power like HItler. Max make books and give it to her as a present
Hardships: Hans and Max leaving, the coming of war which the character don’t know as well as the reader, new arrogant stealing leader, organizes the attacks and helps steals
Homecoming - Writes a book in her basement, survives the war and the narrator gives her “the book thief” (she made)
