Candide grows up in the baron’s castle under the teaching of Pangloss, who teaches him that this world is “best of all possible worlds”. The baron banishes Candide for kissing his daughter, Cunégonde. Candide is soon recruited into Bulgars army and was brutally beaten. He witness a terrible battle, in which he escapes and travel to Holland. When Candide reaches Holland he is taken in by Anabaptist named Jacques. Candide runs into a beggar and realized it was Pangloss. Pangloss explain that he contracted the disease syphilis and that the Bulgar army murder Cunégonde and her family. The baron slaps Candide with his sword and which Candide responded by stabbing him. Candide in shock of what he did, Cacambo rushes to dress Candide in the baron’s clothes to escape. Cacambo and Candide finds a canoe and row down a river, where they found a village. El Dorado where gold and jewels scattered the streets and are greeted by generosity. Candide misses Cunégonde, and after a month in Eldorado he and Cacambo leaves with countless invaluable jewels and 102 swift sheep. As they travel towards Surinam, they lose all but two sheep. Candide tells Cacambo to go get Cunégonde and the old woman while he tries to secure a ship to Venice.
