In the book The Cay, the main character, Phillip, is stranded on an island with and African whose name is Timothy. Phillip, is blind of the world, he becomes blind though that helps him see later, his thoughts about Africans change, and his glasses that he wears represents the time that he stays on the cay. Phillip is blind even though he can see. In the beginning of the story, the world was at war and Curacao was surrounded by German submarines. The whole city was panicking, except for Phillip. Phillip said, “I was not frightened, just terribly excited.” Phillip also disobeys his parents. He says, “I just wanted to see the submarines.” Also, Phillip does not think of Africans as real people. Phillip is racist when he talks about them with his mother. Phillip’s blindness enables him to see later on in the book. Without depending on his sight, Phillip sees things different than when he can see. Later in the book, while Phillip and Timothy are stranded on the island and Phillip is blind, Phillip asks Timothy, “Timothy, are you still black?” In the beginning of the book, Phillip has no respect for Africans. Phillip’s mother doesn’t like them either. She said, “They are not the same as you, Phillip. When Phillip and Timothy were stranded on the raft on the open sea, a school of flying fish passed by and Timothy grabbed two of them. Not being able to light a fire and cook them, Timothy told Phillip to eat them raw. Phillip did not understand that he needed to eat the fish in order to survive. Phillip looked up at Timothy and saw him eating it raw and thought, “Then sure are different, they eat raw fish.” Once Timothy died, Phillip understood why Timothy did the things that he did was so that if he did die, Phillip would be able to fend for
