Have you ever wondered about those people who live on streets and are orphans? Most of them might have a chance in life. In the book, The Midwife’s Apprentice, by Karen Kushman, it tells a story about a girl named Alyce, also known as Brat or Beetle. Alyce is a miserable orphan who changes her outlook of life by working as the Midwife’s apprentice, causing her to become more confident. She was a hopeless and desperate orphan who was homeless and slept in a dung heap. There were three things she wanted, a content heart, full stomach, and a place in the world. At the beginning of the book, with no money, attention, and home, Beetle was hopeless. She was told that she had to work to eat, so she became the midwife’s apprentice.
