The Forgiving and Rebellious, Louie Zamperini
Louie was a rebellious child who became one of America’s great fighters in World War 2. Louie was making bad choices as a child and his brother, Pete, picked him up and made him a great olympian runner. Louie was a lieutenant in the Army Air Forces. He was captured and tortured by the Japanese. In the novel, Unbroken, written by Laura Hillenbrand, Louie was rebellious and forgiving because he was a rebel in the beginning of the novel and he forgave all of his captors. When Louie went back to Japan, he went to go see his captors so he can forgive them and “ In bewilderment, the men who has abused him watched him come to them, his hands extended, a radiant smile on his face”(pg. 273). This shows that Louie is forgiving because instead of holding a grudge against the people who once hurt him, he forgave them. On page 281, Louie wanted to see the bird face-to-face but he didn’t want to so he sent a letter instead and it said, “ To Matsuhiro [sic] Watanabe, .... As you probably know, I returned to Japan in 1952 [sic] … I asked then about you, and was told that you probably had committed Hara Kiri [sic], which I was said to hear. At that moment, like the others, I also forgave…”(pg. 281). This letter shows that Louie is forgiving because he forgave Matsuhiro Watanabe, aka the bird, even though Louie thought of killing him. Cynthia took Louie to Graham who talked about god because Louie was in a bad state and started drinking heavily. When Louie got there, he remembered what he said to god. He said, “ … If you’ll save me, I’ll serve you forever. And then, standing under the tent on a clear night in Los Angeles, Louie felt rain falling on his face. It was the last flashback he’d ever have…”(pg. 269). This means that Louie is forgiving because what Graham was talking about, talked Louie out of wanting revenge and into forgiving. These quotes
