In 1948 The New Yorker magazine published a short story written by an author named Shirley Jackson. The short story was called The Lottery. The story takes place on a clear sunny morning around 10 a.m.. It was summer, the day was June 27 and that was the day that the lottery took place. It was in a little village with about only 300 people in it. The lottery was in the town square between the post office and the bank. The young kids collected stones. This lottery wasn’t a lottery that you got your name drawn and won a big prize. In this lottery you would draw a piece of paper out of a black wooden box and if you had a black dot on your paper that means that you were to get stoned. The person who draws is usually the husband/ father of the family. The man that has the dot on the paper means that his family then draws to see who gets stoned. The saying in this story is “ lottery in June corn be heavy soon”. A theme throughout the story would be the power of tradition. The people in the village have been doing the lottery for many many years. When Mr. Adams told old man Warner about trying to give up the lottery Mr. Warner said that “ it is crazy for giving up the lottery and said that he was a fool for trying to give up the tradition of the lottery”. Old man Warner has been through 77 of the lottery's and he doesn't think it should stop. …show more content…

An old woman walked up to davy and handed him rocks to throw at his mother. The last similarity would be that the Hutchinson family was the family that got the
