The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien The Things They Carried Summary. The Things They Carried is a collection of twenty-two stories, or chapters. All focus on the Alpha Company and the fate of its soldiers after they return home to America. A character named Tim O'Brien (same name as the author) narrates most of the stories. These are stories flashbacks and flash forwards that encapsulate the feeling Tim had when he was drafted into the war and is based off his experiences. This involves the shock of being drafted as well as the many missions and interesting one=cedents that took place in vietnam they change the characters and gives the reader a firsthand view of the struggles faced by people fighting in the vietnam war. He is seen as the soldier, a writer and a kid. His family and his Country are the only reasons he is at war, inside he is actually a pacifist. Jimmy Cross- He is the lieutenant of the Alpha Company. He is also responsible for the entire group of men. Cross has good intentions but he is unsure of himself of how to lead his men. He feels guilty because he believes that his love for a girl named Martha and his tendency to follow orders from other people despite his better judgment caused the deaths of Ted Lavender and Kiowa, two members of Alpha Company. Mitchell Sanders- A kind soldier that has a strong sense of justice. He told stories for the men. He appears like a fatherly figure. Kiowa- He is thoughtful, humorous, and respects the vietnamese people. He isn't a coward and is Tim O’Brien’s best friend. Bob “Rat” Kiley- He is the medic, he was so stressed that he had to shoot his toe off so that he is forced to leave the post.
