In this essay i will be exploring the conflict between religious and secular viewpoints, and ultimately the importance of this theme in 1900 novels as a whole. To do this i will be exploring the this theme in both litterer texts -Brighton rock and Lies of Silence.
The most obvious example of secular morality within Greene’s novel Brighton rock is depicted through the character of Ida who’s morality is unflinchingly conveyed to us by greene through the declarative statement,’ she was not religious’ but rather believing ,’only in ghosts ,ouija boards, tables which rapped' this immediately conveys to us her lack of religious belief and in extension her secular beliefs, this is supported by Ida's depiction life as ,’sunlight on brass bedposts,
