Authors often use symbolism, which is used to make an object represent something else that is greater or deeper than its literal meaning, and motifs, which are ideas that are repeated to contribute to the development the theme, in order to write a great novel. The author of the novel A Separate Peace, John Knowles, utilizes nature symbols and motifs in order to acknowledge the differences in characteristics of the two protagonists, Gene and Phineas. Knowles forms a contrast between the two major characters by using the details of the Devon and the Naguamsett river located in Devon. Gene describes the Devon River as a place where they “had so much fun, all the summer” (76). Finny’s lively and energetic traits compare to the Devon River as

My quote for my journal entry is “ That book was made by Mark Twain… he told the truth mainly… there was things he stretched but he mainly told the truth.” Page 11. Huckleberry Finn is the narrator of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Huckleberry is the one speaking during this quote, Huck is telling the story to the reader and his thoughts on Mark Twain. The importance of this quote is to show the reader before the start of the book how Mark Twain writes, to give a preview or an opinion of Mark Twain.
He felt that, if he admitted that Gene had ultimately broken his leg, he would be putting the friendship between him and Gene in jeopardy. After Gene tells Phineas that he jostled the limb, Phineas angrily replies, "I'll kill you if you don't shut up." (62) This shows how much Phineas values his friendship with Gene, as he is willing to go to extreme extents to preserve it. However, Phineas' inability to admit the truth ultimately brought his own death. Near the end of the story, Brinker held a trial to determine exactly what happened between Gene and Phineas on the tree

Stories can be used to empower, to break, and to rebuild human nature. Moreover, the most dangerous kind of story is a single story. Single stories are so incredibly dangerous because they create stereotypes and, as Adiche said, “the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but they are incomplete” (Adiche). A single story about Africa being a completely destitute and hopeless place caused Adiche’s college roommate to immediately have extreme feelings of melancholy for her; her roommate even believed she was unable to work a stove which was far from the truth.
Phineas, after being tormented by Gene’s actions, still finds forgiveness in his heart. Shortly after Gene visits Phineas in the infirmary, Gene tells Phineas how it was he who purposely jounced the limb (Knowles 191). Phineas, in response to Gene’s great remorse, says, “Something just seized you. It wasn’t anything you really felt against me, it wasn’t some kind of hate you’ve felt all along. It wasn’t anything personal” (Knowles 191).
Tragedy―a timeless phenomenon. Sometimes used in fiction to entertain, yet sometimes induces great suffering for real people. The genre of Greek tragedy is a staple of Ancient Greek culture, and its influence continues to be seen in fiction today. In Beloved, Toni Morrison tackles the story of African Americans post-Civil War. Traditionally, and stereotypically, people today perceive the end of the Civil War as a concrete turning point for the lives of African Americans at the time, as if their quality of life improved immediately after the war.
