Among the three essays, “How My Illiterate Grandmother Raised an Educated Black Man” by Terrell Jermaine Starr occupied my mind most. Objectively, it is in part because it was the first essay I read; therefore, it offered me a strong impression comparing to other essays. Subjectively, the story itself was truly interesting and moving. In addition, the title was like both a brief summary and the curiosity trigger.
What I learned that certain events may occur and it will change your thought over something. The steps I had to take was to write a outline overview of what my essay was going to be like and think about the argument and claims I had to pick to support it and find quotes in the book that support my claims. We had to do timed essay about are theme of the essay were going to on. The way we wrote the essay was in TIED format because it would be easier to introduce the claim and back it up with evidence and finally discuss what it means. The leadership skill I used was to complete project effectively because I had to concentrate what I was writing about.
In Lynda Barry’s essay, The Sanctuary of School, she expresses her views on the economics of public education through her personal issues of being a neglected child. She describes her childhood involving neglectful parents and having only her brother to lean on. Barry’s personal testimony does deflect from her main point that budget cuts in public schools damage children of neglect even more. Her stance is not very effective since she does not elaborate on her main point with any statistics, facts, and data for support. During my research I found this source to be extremely accurate because of its presentation of mostly facts, however, this method of writing made it somewhat difficult to grasp at first read but after reading it multiple times the information became much more clear. As essays need examples and evidence they also need some emotion involved. Emotion helps the reader relate to your argument, helps them become more connected to your argument. Gay uses multiply different stories to bring emotion to her argument about LGBT being victims of hate crimes because of who they are. She talks about lesbians in Texas being shot, in Oklahoma a man’s vehicle was destroyed, two men were attacked close to their home, and another man was hospitalized. Writing essays and putting some emotion in them really helps bring your argument to life.
Out of all the texts i analyzed in this unit so far, my favorite would have to be the Jim Crow Laws. I personally liked this one more due to the chaos and absurdity of the laws. I took an interest in it and i was most entertained while writing the prompt and while reading about it. The source i used was Rise and Fall of Jim Crow Laws PBS, it was very informative and the visuals of the website gave me a better understanding of what it was like in the past.

In the middle section of the poem, Stevens establishes the dominance of the artist; the woman is portrayed as the active and significant feature of the poem, while the sea is presented only as a location and becomes insignificant. Referring to the woman as the “maker of the song she sang” (15), it confirms her not only as the creator of art and the maker of her own version of reality, but also relates her to God, the maker of the world.
