Throughout the story Brother shows examples of both sides of pride. For he is both very compassionate ,yet very discouraging towards his brother. He shares both hatred , which is presented when he wants to kill his sibling, while also compassion . Which is clearly shown when he decides to become a teacher or mentor towards Doodle by helping him conquer the impossible. “I did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death.” [Hurst 217] Brother possesses both the positive and negative, in which the positive shows us that pride can help urge us to accomplish goals we wish to reach. While the negative side shows us that pride can be destructive if we allow it to make us lose sight of what is important .Brother’s pride helps allow his little brother Doodle to develop a healthy life away from his little rubber sheet in the front bedroom. Allowing him to live a life full of happiness and filled with hope rather than a depressing, pointless life where he just counts the hours till the moment his clock stops ticking. [Hurst 213] This is a positive example provided in the story, which proves that Brother is the first to recognize that his sibling is in fact very intellect. But if we look back to the very beginning, of “The Scarlet Ibis”,where six year old Brother wanted to kill innocent Doodle when he was unaware of his brothers intelligence we can see there has been a sudden change in character.
