In “Sonny's Blues” by James Baldwin, the central theme of brotherhood is communicated through the use of conflict between Sonny and the narrator. The first example is when Sonny and the narrator are arguing about Sonny's future, page 34 “It's not going to be funny when you have to make your living at it, let me tell you that. I said, “Furious”. This shows Sonny and the narrator arguing because the narrator doesn't believe that Sonny’s dream job of being a jazz musician will make him any money, and wants the best for Sonny so he tries to convince him to change his mind. The significance of this and how it relates to the theme of brotherhood is that they are arguing because the narrator loves and cares for his brother, and will do anything to
