Since he is not allowed to stay out later than 12 am his brothers were very worried. Darry was very mad so he slapped Ponyboy. Pony was very shocked and ran away. He asked Johnny to run away with him but soon realized that was not logical. They decided to go to the park so Pony could cool down before going home.
Darry and Ponyboy have a substantially complex relationship, with many fluctuations in their feelings towards each other, or their perception of those feeling throughout the book. While Ponyboy dreams about the country, Ponyboy realizes that “Darry would lose that cold, hard look and be like he used to be...before Mom and Dad were killed” (48). Without the death of Ponyboy’s parents, Darry would still be just a brother to Ponyboy. These dramatic changes resulted in Ponyboy to “get hard” or grow up without a brother or true parents to lean on.
Response and Analysis: Ponyboy is normally quiet, reserved, and non-violent, but after getting emotionally slapped in the face by Cherry for being a greaser and then physically slapped to the ground by Darry, Ponyboy had enough. Initially, I though that Ponyboy was not using his head on this one, but in the end, I think he really was. He is making a statement to Darry on how he feels he is being treated. Ponyboy becomes less afraid of Darry when he realizes that Darry actually does love him. After Ponyboy gets to see Darry when he is taken to the hospital because of the church fire, Darry is standing outside waiting for him. On page 96 Ponyboy writes, Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying... Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda. Ponyboy also becomes less afraid of Darry when he starts fighting back when Darry yells at him.

Sacrifice, care, bravery, courage, etc; but only one of the characters in the novel exhibits all of the above qualities and is a true hero. Some of the heroic characteristics that were present were sacrifice and caring. Darry exhibits sacrifice and care when he gives up a college scholarship in order to take care of his brothers. Ponyboy vouches for his brother’s character stating that Darry “had been a real popular guy in school; he was captain of the football team and he had been voted Boy of the year”, but goes on to lament that at this point in the story he “didn’t have time between jobs to even think about college”(16).
Darry has an extremely serious personality and loves Ponyboy with tough love. All three show love in different ways, but they still do love. Love is shown throughout all of the book The Outsiders in various ways, even though there is lots of violence. Dally and Johnny had a very close bond. They were very close all the time and really admired each other.
Parents/Guardians are meant to take good care of their child or siblings. It’s their responsibility to feed them and give them shelter. Without parents, these children or siblings have no place to go other than the streets and cause trouble and join gangs. For example, in the book the Outsiders written by S.E Hinton the characters Johnny, Dally and Bob died because their parents didn’t care about them or matter to them. Their parents were responsible for their deaths.
When you think of family you might think of adults and their children, or kids who lost their parents but are still related to each other. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton tells otherwise. It shows that even if you are not related, you can still be family; you can still have love and affection for each other. In the book, there is a contradiction between the gang’s biological family and their “family”. There is connection shown between the greasers from the Socs in the blue Mustang to Johnny dying in the hospital not wanting to see his mother.
